Candle Care Tip #1

Trimming your wick before each use will extend the life of your candle.

After every burn you will notice that on the end of the wick is extra debris. We call this a "mushroom wick." By trimming these you will extend the life of your candle, reduce soot, and keep your candle burning smoothly. In this blog post I am going to teach you the proper way to trim your wick before burning the candle.

  • Materials Needed: A candle, & scissors.

*Note: some candles with wooden wicks may need a special trimmer.

  • Time to complete: less than 45 seconds

The only thing you need in order to trim the wick(s) on your candle is a pair of scissors. I found a pair of kitchen shears.

This is what a "mushroom wick" looks like. Notice the mushroom shape and the unwanted debris stuck to the end of the wick. This is the part that we want to trim.

We prefer to trim the wicks to about 1/4 inch.

Clean the debris off of the candle as best as you can in order to keep your candle looking good! Now you are ready to light the candle.

Do this before every use and you will keep your candle looking good, increase the burn time, and reduce soot. The candle show in this installment of Candle Care Tips is from the Swan Creek Candle Pottery Collection.
